What’s Your Default?
: Campus Single-Use Item Provision Survey
Many of the single-use items we receive every day are provided without being requested.
The choices we make can change depending on what is provided by default.
This survey aims to understand how single-use items are provided on campus,
assess conditions for using reusable alternatives,
and identify which defaults should be changed first.
Your responses will help shape improvement proposals
to be shared with universities and campus vendors.
Changing What Comes
by Default on Campus!
The issue of single-use items cannot be solved
through individual environmental awareness alone.
People’s consumption choices are also shaped by systems
that automatically provide items without being requested,
preselected options on apps and kiosks,
and environments that make reusable alternatives difficult to use.
To address this, ASEZ is surveying how single-use items are provided
and the conditions for using reusable alternatives on campus.
It will also gather university students’ views
and work with universities and vendors
to change one default in practice.
What Activities Will We Carry Out?
Survey how single-use items are provided at campus cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, and other facilities, as well as the conditions for using reusable items.
Conduct panel campaigns, polls, and awareness surveys on and around campus to gather university students’ views.
Be Sure to Check These!
Check whether store staff automatically provide single-use items or provide them only upon request. For apps and kiosks, check whether single-use items are preselected and what steps are required to change the selection.
These records provide important evidence of how defaults that influence consumer choices are set in both offline and digital environments.
Record whether personal reusable cups can be used and whether water refill stations, washing facilities, and return stations are available. This helps show whether reducing single-use items is actually possible. Without viable alternatives, efforts to reduce single-use items are difficult to put into practice.
The photos you take today will serve as essential evidence of change if the default is later changed. Before-and-after photos taken from the same location and angle will clearly show whether improvements have been made.

Make a challenge card. (Front: SINGLE USE BY DEFAULT / Back: BETTER CHOICES BY DEFAULT)

Hold up the front of the card and look at the camera.

Slowly flip the card.

Say, “Flip the Default!”

Post it on social media with #FlipTheDefault. For group photos or videos, not everyone needs to hold a challenge card. Those who are not holding one may use props that reflect the idea of “Better Choices,” such as tumblers or other reusable containers.
