On February 1, 2026, ASEZ members carried out a mural painting volunteer activity at the Coronel Portillo Silva Educational Institution stadium in Huaura, Peru, as part of a crime prevention initiative based on CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). Organized under the “Reduce Crime Together (Reduzcamos Juntos el Crimen)” project, the activity aimed to create a brighter, cleaner community environment and contribute to building a safer space.

CPTED is a strategy that prevents crime through environmental design. It is based on the understanding that neglected and disorderly surroundings can increase the likelihood of crime. By improving the environment through activities such as clean-ups and mural painting, CPTED seeks to reduce opportunities for crime. ASEZ has been actively implementing CPTED initiatives to transform communities into brighter and safer places. The international community has also consistently emphasized the importance of this approach. The WHO (World Health Organization), for example, identifies CPTED as one of the key strategies for violence prevention, noting that adjusting environmental factors—such as improving lighting, ensuring visibility, and managing spaces—can effectively reduce opportunities for crime and violence. In this way, CPTED activities like mural painting and environmental improvement go beyond enhancing aesthetics; they are recognized globally as practical measures to reduce crime and increase residents’ sense of safety.
The event was attended by Huaura District Mayor Juan Reaño Antunes and Jose Ramirez from the district’s environmental department, who came to encourage the volunteers. Mayor Juan Reaño Antunes praised ASEZ’s ongoing efforts, stating, “ASEZ young adults are always willing to serve both the municipality and the community, carrying out their work selflessly without expecting anything in return.”

ASEZ members who participated in the activity worked together to complete the mural. Through the process of taking on individual roles and collaborating, participants shared that they were once again able to experience the value of community cooperation.
Member Kiara Rodríguez Soto said, “By working together and fulfilling our respective roles, we were able to achieve results beyond our expectations.” Miguel Querevalu Soto added, “Thanks to the efforts of the members who started early in the morning, we were able to create something truly beautiful. It was especially meaningful to receive encouragement and praise from local residents who stopped by to watch.”

Participants carefully worked to ensure that the mural came together harmoniously, reflecting on the meaning of service and their sense of responsibility toward the community. They also expressed hope that this activity would inspire positive interest and change within the local community, while deepening their appreciation for cooperation.

This mural project became a meaningful opportunity to create a brighter and more pleasant space shared by students and local residents, while promoting positive change within the community. ASEZ plans to continue a variety of volunteer initiatives in collaboration with local communities, including CPTED-based crime prevention activities.
