In December 2024, 50 ASEZ members in Panama gathered along the Viejo Coast, Panama, a significant area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historical site represents the origins of Panama City and embodies the historical and cultural identity of Panama. However, with the recent rise in tourists, the site has faced environmental challenges due to single-use plastics and other wastes left by visitors. These pollutants not only affect the historic site itself but also pose a threat to nearby rivers and green areas like mangrove forests.
ASEZ members who gathered on that day cleaned up the area around the Viejo coast to protect Panama’s precious cultural heritage and the natural environment consisting of mangroves, and collected about 2.5 tonnes of waste such as auto parts, plastics, and other household waste.
In particular, this activity was made possible through the active support of the Panamanian government. Digna Barsallo, National Director of Coasts and Seas, Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Panama, said, “ASEZ is a very active organization with an extraordinary commitment to protecting the environment. I hope to collaborate with ASEZ in the future. Thank you so much for your efforts. Keep up the wonderful work,” encouraging ASEZ members.
Meryl Rouge Alvarado (University of Panama), said, “We participated in this volunteer service with the hope that this historic site and its mangrove forest will be beautifully preserved. I believe ASEZ’s activities will inspire many people to take the lead in protecting the cultural heritage and natural environment of our region.”
Cultural heritage and nature are not just the remnant and beauty of the past. They are invaluable records of human history, connecting us to future generations while sharing our roots and identity. Nature maintains the balance of ecosystems and provides life to humans. The two coexist with us in an inseparable relationship, forming the habitat we share.
The critical task of conserving the environment and protecting cultural heritage requires not only individual responsibility but also collective action across all sectors of society. ASEZ’s coastal cleanup was more than an environmental effort—it marked a significant step toward a global movement addressing shared challenges through cooperation. We hope ASEZ’s continued initiatives will inspire more people worldwide, highlighting the enduring values of sustainability and collaboration.
