On June 9, 2024, the ASEZ Forum to Combat Food Insecurity took place at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The event welcomed college students, experts, and community leaders to explore solutions for food insecurity.

The event began with a welcome address and an introduction to ASEZ, followed by presentations from ASEZ university student members. Expert VIPs then provided in-depth insights on the issue. After the presentations, the VIPs had the opportunity to visit panels displaying the awards that ASEZ has received and the volunteer services conducted by the ASEZ, engaging in discussions with ASEZ members.

The forum featured notable guests, including Dr. Casey Castillo, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank; Imelda Browning, RN in Home Health; and Dr. Saschca Longstreth, Professor of Child Development at San Diego State University.

Imelda Browning, RN in Home Health, shared, “I just want to express my gratitude for this. I am very motivated, very inspired, and I was very impressed what this mission is doing right now. I would like to be a part of it. I am ready to get into the field with every one of you.”

Dr. Castillo commented, “It was such a treat to be able to participate and to attend the wonderful ASEZ conference that focused on food insecurity, here in San Diego County and globally. I’ve always been grateful for the participation and partnership with this group and seeing their amazing efforts. They have impacts in this county and also globally. We are grateful for their food drives and volunteering efforts. It really takes partnerships and a gigantic effort in those partnerships to solve big problems, and partners like ASEZ are really helping do that.”

UCSD student Tiara, an ASEZ member, noted, “Many were able to come and we were able to raise awareness of this issue. Although we also may be in need, that doesn’t mean that we should have an individualistic mindset, but actually a mindset to serve others. When we all have this mindset, then true change can happen.”

Another UCSD student, Alyssa, said, “I was really touched that we were able to share about ASEZ in the works that we do in terms of climate change, disaster relief, community service, and crime reduction as well.”

The ASEZ Forum effectively highlighted the urgency of tackling food insecurity and emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing this challenge. By bringing together community leaders, experts, and students, the event showed the vital role of collective action in creating a sustainable future. We eagerly anticipate ASEZ’s continued efforts in advancing food security.
