ASEZ, a global group of university students, is creating a new wave of environmental action by carrying out tree-planting campaigns around the world as part of its Green Carbon initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality and respond to the climate crisis.

Trees are a representative green carbon resource that absorb carbon and contribute to ecosystem restoration. These activities, conducted across regions including Asia and Africa, have worked in cooperation with local communities to promote environmental recovery and raise awareness, demonstrating the positive impact of youth-led environmental action.
On January 25, ASEZ planted 200 bamboo trees in Kampung Empila Hilir, Sarawak, Malaysia, as part of efforts to improve the local environment. The event was attended by Idris Bin Buang, Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, as well as officials from the Samarahan Municipal Council and the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation, adding significance to the occasion. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, participants remained committed and completed the volunteer work, showing strong determination to restore the local environment.

Deputy Speaker Idris Bin Buang emphasized the importance of protecting nature, stating, “Protecting the environment is a duty given by God,” and expressed his gratitude to ASEZ and the Samarahan Municipal Council. Following the event, key local figures expressed their support for ASEZ’s environmental efforts and participated in signing in support of “Zero Plastic 2040.” ASEZ members shared that the activity was a meaningful opportunity to recognize not only the value of trees but also the importance of cooperation between residents and young adults beyond cultural and religious differences.

On February 23, ASEZ carried out another tree-planting campaign in the Umlazi area of Durban, South Africa. ASEZ visited Embizweni High School, Ekwazini Secondary School, and Ntehla Primary School, planting a total of 95 trees. Participants spent approximately four hours digging the soil, planting saplings, covering them with soil and compost, and watering them with care.

This initiative was conducted in connection with South Africa’s National Greening Program under the Department of Environment, with plans to expand continuously toward a goal of planting 1,000 trees over the next year. The event was attended by officials from Ethekwini Parks, the Waste Management Department, Mangosuthu University of Technology, and principals from participating schools, all of whom highlighted the importance of tree planting and expressed appreciation for ASEZ’s efforts. In addition to Durban, ASEZ has continued its tree-planting activities in Pretoria, planting a total of 135 trees.

Mondli Khuboni, principal of Embizweni High School, stated, “It is a great honor to have ASEZ members carry out a program at our school that aims to change students’ lives. On behalf of all students and teachers, I sincerely thank you.”
ASEZ’s environmental efforts are being carried out in diverse ways across various regions. During the same period, ASEZ also conducted tree-planting activities in the Philippines, including in Davao City, Quezon City, Parañaque City, and Antipolo City in Rizal Province. In this way, ASEZ continues to create sustainable change by working closely with local communities and addressing region-specific needs.

ASEZ’s tree-planting campaigns are tailored to reflect the environmental characteristics of each country and needs of each community. Beyond simply planting trees, these initiatives help raise awareness about environmental protection and foster cooperation with local communities. They are particularly meaningful in that they expand sustainability and scalability through partnerships with government agencies, local authorities, and educational institutions.

ASEZ’s green initiatives, taking place around the world, are expanding green carbon to contribute to carbon neutrality and demonstrating how youth-led environmental action can create significant change in the era of the climate crisis. ASEZ will continue to expand its tree-planting campaigns based on its global network, leading green carbon initiatives for carbon neutrality, promoting environmental restoration, and driving meaningful change toward a sustainable future.
