June 12, 2025

On Thursday, June 12th, the ASEZ chapter in Washington, D.C. hosted a Journalism Forum at the National Press Building. Approximately 60 people, including ASEZ volunteers, distinguished members of the press gathered to discuss the impact of journalism on achieving world peace and the importance of training the next generation of leaders.

The event began with a welcome reception, giving guests an opportunity to learn more about ASEZ, and the initiatives ASEZ members are leading worldwide. One of the guests, Lyndsy Keith, Political Director, Chief White House Correspondent, and Evening News Anchor for Merit TV, who also served as a panelist, enthusiastically praised the group’s efforts, saying, “I am so happy to be here, and I am very impressed by ASEZ’s global reach. I’m shocked I hadn’t heard about such an amazing organization sooner!

Following the reception, ASEZ members presented the cause of global instability along with its damage, and highlighted how a lack of knowledge has negatively affected communities around the world. In addition, it addressed the limited number of journalism and public policy degrees pursued at the collegiate level, which restricts the pipeline of future professionals in these critical fields. Along with this, he also emphasized how important a role the media plays in changing public perception and conveying the reality of the issues.

The forum officially opened with a powerful keynote address from Lori Montenegro, Washington Bureau Chief for the national television network, Telemundo. She encouraged ASEZ members, calling them “change makers” who can transform the way the world views news and, more importantly, change the hearts of listeners through the power of their words.

Panelists Lyndsy Keith, Ryan Schmelz, Washington D.C. correspondent for FOX News; and Patricia Vasconcellos, White House and State Department Correspondent for Brazil’s SBT Network, continued the discussion on topics such as the credibility and truthful reporting of the media, the role of journalism as a mediator for dialogue beyond conflict, and advice for young journalists.

Ryan Schmelz advised, “You must first refine yourself and strive to be a role model for others.”

Lyndsy Keith emphasized that “Speaking out for the truth and persevering with determination is fundamental to being a journalist.”

Patricia Vasconcellos offered heartfelt encouragement to the audience, saying, “If you work with joy and passion, success will naturally follow.”

After the forum concluded, Ms. Keith shared her thoughts, saying, “I am honored to be here with ASEZ and I am so blown away by how organized this event was. It was so welcoming from the first moment until the end.” Additionally, ASEZ volunteer Aischa Savedra reflected on the experience, stating “I have a better appreciation for what journalists do and how storytelling can promote peace.”

This forum served as an opportunity to instill confidence in ASEZ members that they can bring about change through their voices and expertise.

It also inspired a sense of mission to use their education, talents, and passion to exert a positive influence on their communities.

This event became a starting point to encourage young people to take the lead in driving change for world peace and the well-being of humanity in the fields of journalism and public policy.

Moving beyond mere theory into action, ASEZ’s initiatives are expected to continue serving as a model for youth around the world, expanding the scope of solidarity and cooperation for peace.
